Agony in the garden
After the Last Supper, Jesus took the three disciples, Peter, James and John, to the Garden of Gethsemane.
“At this time Jesus became fearful and exceedingly sorrowful.” So he went to the garden and prayed, pleading with the Father to take away the impending doom (betrayal, arrest, judgment, crucifixion). “If it is possible, let that moment pass from him.”
In the Gospel of Luke, “an angel appeared to him from heaven and strengthened him.”
Jesus prayed three times, and each time he returned to see the three disciples asleep.
In Christian doctrine, Jesus is fully God and fully man at the same time. The agony in the garden at this moment (is an extremely touching scene, the truest and fullest expression of his humanity.
The angel in the upper right hand corner is holding a cup. For in the Gospel, Jesus says, “Father! If you are willing, remove this cup!”
